IP phones explained

IP phone services like Vonage are referred to as different things (Voice over IP, VoIP, internet phone, IP telephony), but they all refer a new way of making phone calls. The technology used is called "Internet Protocol" (where the "IP" bit of the name comes from). It turns your voice into data that travels over your existing broadband connection, rather than the old telephone network.

But, even though IP phones use the Internet, the technology has nothing to do with your computer. In fact, your computer doesn't even need to be on for you to use an IP phone service like Vonage. The people you call don't need a computer or an Internet connection. All they need is a regular phone. When someone calls you, your phone rings as usual.

Do I need a special IP phone handset?

You can keep using your regular corded or cordless handset, just like you do today. You plug your phone into the Vonage IP phone adapter. This is what turns your regular phone into a type of IP phone that calls other phones worldwide via the Internet rather than the old phone networks.

IP telephony saves you money

Because the Internet doesn't rely on a particular telephone company's network, using an IP phone in Canada saves you money. Your IP phone calling plan includes calls to the US, Puerto Rico and anywhere else in Canada, making all your calls like local calls. That means no more long distance to worry about. And, with our new Vonage World Canada plan, you get unlimited1 calls to over 60 countries.

I have high-speed Internet; can I still get Vonage's IP phone service?

Yes you can. When you switch to Vonage, you can keep your phone number as well as your high-speed service through your telco. You could also use Vonage as a second phone line in the house.

I have phone service from the cable company

If you have cable broadband, you can cancel your cable phone service, keep your number and your broadband connection, and use Vonage as your IP phone – or use Vonage as a second phone line in the house.

IP phone Canada

IP telephones have been around since about 1995. But, it wasn't until the early 2000s, when high-speed Internet was more widely available in Canada, that IP phone services started to proliferate. Vonage was an early entry in the Canadian IP phone market, starting in 2004 and signing up our first customer (who is still with us) in early 2004. We officially launched our IP phone service in March 2004, and have been growing ever since.
