VoIP phones work like your regular phone
You use the same touch tone phone that you make your calls with today. Your phone will ring when someone calls, and you'll be able to call anyone just like always. The difference with a Vonage VoIP phone connection, is that instead of connecting to your old phone company, your phone connects to Vonage, which manages your call over the Internet rather than the old telco networks.
How VoIP works
Vonage VoIP calls have nothing to do with your computer. In fact, your computer doesn't even need to be switched on to use Vonage. Our special Vonage VoIP phone adapter sends your phone call over the data part of your existing DSL or cable broadband. Your voice sounds the same as a regular phone, and the person you're calling will not know you're using VoIP to call them. How long has Canada had VoIP?
VoIP has been around since about 1995. But, it wasn't until the early 2000s, when high-speed Internet was more widely available in Canada, that VoIP services started to proliferate. Vonage was an early entry in the Canadian VoIP market, starting in 2004 and signing up our first customer (who is still with us) in early 2004. We officially launched our VoIP service in March 2004, and have been growing ever since.
Can I make VoIP calls to the US and overseas?
Yes, VoIP phone service connects just like your regular phone service to any place you can dial today. If you have cable broadband, you can cancel your cable phone service, keep your broadband connection and use Vonage as your phone service – or use Vonage as a second phone line in the house.
